How Weighted Averages Work in University

30 March 2026·8 min read

A weighted average gives bigger assessments more influence on your final mark.

Why weighting exists

Universities use weighting to reflect difficulty and importance. A final exam usually carries more weight than a short quiz.

Quick formula

Weighted Average = Σ(Score% × Weight)

If your weights are 20%, 30%, and 50%, your final mark is not a simple average. The 50% item dominates.

Mini example

  • Quiz: 80% × 20% = 16
  • Assignment: 60% × 30% = 18
  • Exam: 55% × 50% = 27.5

Final = 61.5%
