How to Calculate Your Final Grade (SA University Guide)

30 March 2026·8 min read

If your semester marks feel confusing, use one formula:

Final Grade = Σ(Assessment % × Weight)

Worked example

You have:

  • Test: 68% (weight 25%)
  • Assignment: 75% (weight 25%)
  • Exam: 62% (weight 50%)

Calculation:

  • 68 × 0.25 = 17.0
  • 75 × 0.25 = 18.75
  • 62 × 0.50 = 31.0

Final = 66.75%

Common mistakes

  • Mixing percentages and decimals.
  • Ignoring weight values from your module outline.
  • Estimating without checking whether marks are out of 50, 100, or another total.

Faster way

Use our calculator and let it handle the weighting instantly.
